CIO'S EXPECT TO HIRE PROJECT MANAGERS IN 2006
CIO's expect a hiring spree in 2006 and more than half are looking for project management skills, according to a survey by CIO magazine. The fourth annual "State of the CIO" survey, released December 30, 2005, reported that CIO's are more optimistic about hiring than at any time since the 2001 recession.

55% of respondents expect an increase in headcount in 2006, by an average of 11%. 36% expect no change, and 9% expect a decrease, by an average of 12%. The skills needed most in new hires are:
Project management54%
Application development51%
Business process management39%
Security37%
Database management36%

The survey was administered online in June and July 2005 and targeted randomly selected subscribers. 545 individuals responded, all heads of IT with 88% responsible for enterprise wide IT and 12% responsible for divisional IT. 40% of respondents were from companies with annual revenue less than $100 million while 21% reported annual revenue of more than $1 billion.

The same survey suggests the outsourcing of project management is not widespread. Only 14% of respondents currently outsource more than 30% of IT labor, primarily application development, maintenance or support. The respondents reported outsourcing only 12% of application project management or change management, compared to 76% for application development, maintenance or support.
