The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) has announced the 2006 winners of its Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) for the Queensland Region. The Queensland Transplant Tissue Service Project - an Australian first in advanced bone banking - has won the Queensland PMAA Project of the Year award. The announcement was made in Brisbane on 24 August 2006.
This benchmark project for the processing of donor tissue for surgical transplant is a world’s best practice facility. AIPM Queensland Chapter President Alan Tupicoff said the Project of the Year was a huge achievement for Queensland and for the state’s Project Services, a commercialised business unit of the Queensland Department of Public Works.
“A one-team approach was fostered in the procurement of world’s best practice status and Australia’s first donor transplant tissue processing facility,” Mr Tupicoff said.
The project, submitted by the Queensland Department of Public Works, is a Queensland Health commissioned $12.3 million facility which houses the Queensland Bone Bank (QBB) and other future tissue banking services. Project Services was engaged as the Project Managers and Principal Consultants on the bone bank project.
A purpose-built, two-storey, 2056 m² building, the new facility is located at the Queensland Health Pathology and Scientific Services campus, at Nathan. The complex also provides improved office, and secure archive and administrative facilities for documenting donor tissue and recipients.
Bone is the second most commonly transplanted tissue, second only to blood. It has been estimated that between 200 and 300 thousand people worldwide receive bone transplants each year; more than 25 times the number of people who undergo kidney transplants and 100 times the number who undergo heart transplants. Regional bone and tissue banks have been established in order to satisfy an ever increasing demand for bone tissue. The Queensland Bone Bank was first established in 1987. It is now the largest bone bank in Australia.
