Raytheon Australia Project Wins AIPM ACT Project of the Year Award
The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) has announced the 2006 winners of its Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Region. A major change management project within mission systems integrator Raytheon Australia has won the ACT PMAA Project of the Year Award, as announced in Canberra on August 30.

Employing more than 1,000 people across Australia, Raytheon Australia is a mission systems integrator that provides solutions for sea, land, air and office environments.

The project was part of a remarkable transition in Raytheon Australia where a process gap was overcome and a new level of process maturity emerged to satisfy both customer and the company. The company sought to improve its planning and the execution of projects in order to optimise performance for the customer and for its parent company in the US. The task was to combine process improvement with the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®); Raytheon Six Sigma™, and a tailored project management regime. The company’s objective was to achieve process maturity and to instill lasting change to Raytheon Australia in a dynamic environment.

This innovative project illustrated the degree of integration required where the product was changing the Current State (in–use processes) while at the same time using those processes. The project needed to succeed in an environment of maintaining double digit growth, competing project delivery and winning new business, while achieving an acceptable level of process maturity. These initially appeared to be mutually exclusive, but eventually, the project detractors were proved wrong.

Other ACT PMAA award winners announced at the same time included the following:

According to AIPM ACT Chapter President Paul Black, “the Project of the Year was a hugely successful project for Raytheon Australia and its main client. This year’s winners all share a recognition that sound project management is vital if business objectives are to be achieved.”

The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) represents and promotes project management Australia-wide. The organisation also offers a recognition framework for project management and project managers in Australia. AIPM was formed 30 years ago and has since grown to more than 5,500 individual members and 120 corporate members. The membership represents a diverse range of industries including finance, human resources, government, defence, engineering and construction. AIPM organizes the annual PMAA to recognize excellence in project management in each State.
