According to Wikipedia, Istanbul is the largest city and the cultural and commercial center of Turkey. Historically known in English as Constantinople, the city is located on the Bosphorus strait, and encompasses a natural harbor known as the Golden Horn in the northwest of the country. Istanbul extends both on the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus and is the only metropolis in the world situated on two continents. Istanbul is also the only city in the world which served as the capital for three different Empires: The Roman Empire (330-395), Byzantine Empire (395-1453) and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1923). In 1923, following the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the capital was moved to Ankara.

The Istanbul metropolitan area has a population of just over 10 million. Istanbul has always been the centre of the country's economic life due to its location as an international junction of land and sea trade routes. It employs approximately 20% of Turkey's industrial labour and contributes 38% of Turkey's industrial workspace. In addition, the city generates 55% of Turkey's trade and 45% of the country's wholesale trade, and generates 21.2% of Turkey's gross national product. Istanbul contributes 40% of all taxes collected in Turkey. Cultural activity, tourism and commerce are all important to the life of the city. Population growth, traffic, housing, restoration of historic buildings, and planning a 3rd motorway transition of the Bosphorus continue to be major issues.

Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in southwestern Asia and the Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey borders eight countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Syria. In addition, it borders the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Turkey also contains the Sea of Marmara that is used by geographers to mark the border between Europe and Asia, thus making the country transcontinental.

Owing to its strategic location at the intersect of two continents, Turkey's culture is a unique blend of Eastern and Western traditions, often described as a bridge between the two civilisations. With a powerful regional presence in the Eurasian landbelt, Turkey has come to acquire increasing strategic significance. Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic whose political system was established in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk following the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath of World War I. Since then, Turkey has increasingly integrated with the West while continuing to foster relations with the Eastern world.

Turkey is a founding member of the United Nations, the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, a member state of the Council of Europe since 1949, and of NATO since 1952. Since 2005, Turkey is in accession negotiations with the European Union, having been an associate member since 1963. Turkey is also a member of the G20 which brings together the 20 largest economies of the world.
