Amman is the capital city of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a city of 2,125,400 inhabitants (2005 estimate), and the administrative capital and commercial centre of Jordan. Amman is located in a hilly area of north-western Jordan. The city was originally built on seven hills, but it now spans an area of nineteen hills. Because of the cooling effects of its location on a plateau, Amman enjoys four seasons of excellent weather as compared to many other places in the region.

Amman is experiencing rapid growth that is reshaping the ancient city into a commercial hub. Some of the major construction projects now underway in Amman include the following: Abdali Downtown, a new development in the heart of Amman will pedestrian walkway to stores, malls, restaurants, and residential and office buildings, new hi-rises for residential and commercial purposes, a new library and a performing arts center; the New American University of Jordan; Jordan Gate, two identical skyscrapers for offices; Bonyan City, 5 new skyscrapers for apartments and offices; Amman World Trade Center of 33 floors; Amman Financial Tower, with 56 floors; Betina City with 3 central skyscrapers, a mega-mall, a new railway city, a suspended river, and 3 additional towers; Emirates Towers, spiral thin glass buildings and part of the Emarr Mega Plan; Expansion of Queen Alia International Airport; Jordan Twin Towers, 34 stories to be constructed by the Nuqul group; and Andalucian Village that will house over 600 villas, spas, fitness and health centers, swimming pools, and a recreation area. These and other projects in Amman will position the city in the global market and transform the ancient city into a new center of commerce.
