Rebuilding New Orleans! PMI GNO Leaders Promote October PD Summit at PMI Leadership Meetings in Atlanta!
PMForum reporting live from the PMI Global Congress North America in Atlanta

The Greater New Orleans Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI GNO chapter) is inviting PMI members worldwide to come to New Orleans in October and to contribute to rebuilding New Orleans. That was the message brought to the PMI Leadership Meetings in Atlanta this week by PMI GNO chapter leaders.

According to PMI GNO Chapter President Ana Boudreaux, “We wanted to let other PMI chapters know about our conference, but also about how much support we are already getting from other components. For example, the PMI College of Performance Management has organized an entire day of earned value management presentations. And the PMI Houston Chapter is sponsoring our Community Service Day immediately preceding the summit. We really appreciate their support.”

Other PMI GNO chapter leaders attending the leadership meetings in Atlanta but not pictured were Janet Levit, Bryan Bice, Chris Hudson and Angela Nelson.

The PMI GNO chapter is partnering with LavaCon to co-host a Professional Development Summit (PDS) in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA during October 27–30, 2007. This four day event will be one of the biggest project management conferences ever held in New Orleans.

The chapter has announced that day one of the upcoming Professional Development Summit (PDS) will be a Community Service Day, offering conference attendees opportunities to help rebuild New Orleans (from Hurricane Katrina damage). People wanting to help areas of the city that are still in the process of recovering from hurricane Katrina will have the two opportunities that day: helping rebuild homes with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. Transportation is being sponsored by the PMI Houston Chapter in a gracious gesture of chapter-to-chapter support.

According to Greg Wilde, PMI GNO VP Marketing, “People don’t want to help plan hurricane response or rebuilding efforts. They want to get a hammer in their hand and really do something.”

Robert Springmann, VP Finance for the PMI GNO chapter added, “PMI members can also support the rebuilding effort by joining the GNO chapter. You don’t have to live there to join the chapter or to support us, and every little bit helps. We are almost back to pre-Katrina chapter membership levels. PMI members outside of the GNO area who join will receive special recognition by the chapter.”

According to the chapter leaders, the PDS in New Orleans will take the professional development model to a new level, by: Extending the program to a three-day conference with over 60 breakout sessions and hands-on workshops; Introducing national and international speakers at a state-of-the-art conference setting; Utilizing a professional conference management team; Incorporating unusual and entertaining networking concepts; and Contributing to the New Orleans community.

Alfred Cannon, PMI GNO chapter when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 and who remains active as a member of the chapter board, added, “To those of us who immediately returned to New Orleans to rebuild our homes and businesses, this PD Summit is a big deal. It represents a major milestone in our efforts to rebuild the PM profession in New Orleans, which seems like the center of the universe of projects these days. There are so many projects and such a need for good project management!”

The Project Management PDS will be held October 27-30 at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel in the French Quarter in New Orleans. The PMI GNO Chapter is partnering with the LavaCon(R) Conference to co-produce the 2007 PDS. LavaCon is a conference for advanced technical communication professionals-senior technical writers, documentation managers and other professionals interested in learning how to deploy and manage technical communication projects.

The Summit will present proven best practices in the fields of technical communication and project management, as well as innovative techniques for meeting project management challenges. The event will include national and international speakers, professional leaders and project management experts. Help rebuild New Orleans; attend this conference! For those in the southern USA, it should not be missed.
