New Date for first 2008 APM Risk SIG Event
Reported by Miles Shepherd in the UK

Association for Project Management (APM) has announced its first Risk Specific Interest Group (SIG) event for 2008. The SIG has a good track record of event planning but is perhaps best known for its ground breaking guide Project Risk Assessment and Management or PRAM Guide, now in its second revision. The workshop takes place on Thursday 7th February 2008.

The meeting takes place in Bristol (The Watershed, 1 Canon's Road, Harbourside, Bristol BS1 5TX) from 9.00am until 4.00pm. The workshop will examine techniques that can be adopted to increase the chance of meeting project objectives. All sessions are planned to be highly interactive and the day starts with a presentation from David Hillson looking at the potential benefits of interfacing risk and earned value management (EVM) methodologies.

Two further sessions, chaired by Ken Newland and Tony Reid, are again planned to be interactive. Ken will be using case studies, working experience and models to demonstrate Business risks implicit in major contracts. This will have particular emphasis on the planning of the project during the bid stage. Tony will run an interactive session to assess the delegates attitude to innovative behaviour and perception of risk. This is based on a view of the future trends in innovative behaviours in the use of 'creativity and innovation'. Ken and Tony will then bring their two perspectives together for a discussion on how the risks inherent in Innovative behaviours are needed to identify the 'good' risks that are required to be taken to achieve a competitive advantage.

Cost is £45 plus VAT for APM individual members, £55 plus VAT for non APM members, £20 plus VAT for students. This includes lunch and refreshments. Full details are available from http://www.apm.org.uk/eventRisk%20SIG.asp?pdate=0-0&branch=-101

APM recently announced its plans to publish an EVM/Risk Guide and this workshop is the first in a series of planned events prior to its release. APM is particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has experience of adopting a harmonised risk and EVM approach and would welcome views and challenges. Time has been allowed for debate, so if you would like to either question the principles or give your view please join the Risk SIG on 7 February.
