NASA's Ed Hoffman delivers inspirational keynote speech at International Project & Program Management Symposium in Tokyo

Dr. Edward Hoffman, Director of the NASA Academy of Program, Project and Engineering Leadership in the USA, delivered an inspirational keynote speech at the International Project & Program Management Symposium Tokyo 2008 in Tokyo, Japan on Monday, March 10. The two day conference was being held at Tower Hall, Funabori in Tokyo. The sponsor of the two-day project management conference was the Project Management Association of Japan (PMAJ).

Dr. Hoffman (pictured) presented a review of NASA missions, programs, projects and project management. According to Ed, “We live in a project world that is characterized by frequent change, complexity and virtual expertise. In such a world knowledge identification and sharing is a necessity.

At NASA, all work is through programs and projects, but we are entering a new age of project management. Project leadership is key, and that means building and leading project teams. NASA engineering and project manager practitioners have developed a vibrant community of practice to share knowledge and spread mission excellence. We emphasize stories at NASA and have created a learning community for project management in order to share those stories. Experiences and lessons learned for successful program and project management are shared among executives, program and project managers, and new team members.”

Ed emphasized the growing importance of global collaboration on all of their programs, and the need to keep up with changes in the project management profession while maintaining traditional capabilities. His speech was very inspirational, with slides and photos of NASA programs and projects including the International Space Station, plans for bases on the Moon, and future travel to Mars. His speech was on Monday morning to the 400+ attendees.

Dr. Ed Hoffman is Director of the NASA Academy of Program/Project and Engineering Leadership (APPEL), Dr. Hoffman is responsible for the development of program/project and engineering leaders and teams within NASA. This includes the development and maintenance of a comprehensive program/project management and engineering competency model, training curriculum, consulting services for project management teams, and knowledge sharing strategies. In this capacity, Dr. Hoffman works within NASA, as well as externally with leaders of industry, academia, associations, and other government agencies in order to establish priorities and enhance capabilities in program and project management.

Dr. Hoffman is an adjunct professor at the George Washington University and Webster University in the United State. He is a frequently invited speaker at conferences and associations worldwide, has authored numerous articles and presentations on program and project management. He co-authored the books entitled, “Project Management Success Stories: Lessons of Project Leaders” published in 2000 by Wiley and “Shared Voyage” published in 2005 by National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA History Division. Dr. Hoffman holds a Doctorate, as well as a Master of Arts and a Master of Science degree from Columbia University in the area of social and organizational psychology. He received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Brooklyn College in 1981.

The “International Project & Program Management Symposium Tokyo 2008 – “In pursuit of organizational project management value,” was held in Tokyo, Japan during 10-11 March 2008. The symposium was sponsored by the Project Management Association of Japan. The Program Director and Chairman for the IP&PMS Tokyo 2008 was Dr. Hiroshi Tanaka, president of PMAJ. Mr. Tetsuhiro Yamane, PMP, was Project Manager.

The national Project Management Association of Japan (PMAJ) was born in 2005 thorough the integration of the Japan Project Management Forum (JPMF – pioneer of Japan’s project management society) and Project Management Professionals Certification Center (PMCC). PMAJ has 3,000 individual and 110 corporate members from all branches of the Japanese industry and governmental agencies. PMAJ offers its own standard “The Guidebook of Project and Program Management for Enterprise Innovation – P2M” and P2M based certification system.
