Reported by Jaycee Krüger in South AfricaDelegates at the PMSA Conference 2008: From Strategy to Reality, taking place at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, South Africa from 26 to 28 May 2008, can look forward to an impressive line-up of international and local speakers, and jam-packed sessions highlighting academic research in project management, and best industry practices.
Day One of the three day conference is due to kick off with a topic that will appeal to South Africa’s project managers in the build-up to the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.
Jürgen Oschadleus, MBA, PMP, Director of Act Knowledge and Managing Partner of Valense Organisational Consultants will reflect on the team building lessons learned from the 2002 Soccer World Cup in his presentation called:

Platinum conference sponsor and PMI and PMSA registered training provider, the
X-Pert Group, will address the audience on the latest trends in project, programme and portfolio management.
After lunch, delegates will have the choice of attending sessions featuring reviewed academic papers on IT Project Management; case studies and trends in project management in local government; or those providing insight into growing in the project management profession. In addition, there are two workshop sessions featuring invited international speakers. Dr
Terry Cooke-Davies (pictured) will present a workshop focussing on
Assessing your Organisations Ability to Deliver Successful Projects Consistently, and
Frank Saladis, PMP, explores the topic of thinking positively about risk management.
On Day Two, Dr
Terry Cooke-Davies will deliver a presentation called
To Err is Human, Especially where Projects and Programs are concerned. He will report on qualitative research into the role of sponsorship and the value of project management to organizations that suggests some pragmatic ways in which organizations can minimise the harmful effects of both the different worldviews of general management and project management and also of the limitations of “the human operating system”, and thus deliver improved value from the management of projects.
Michael Reynders, Manager of the IT Project Office for Medi-Clinic (a private hospital group in South Africa) will then present
A Roadmap towards an Enterprise Project Office.
Outgoing PMSA President,
Elmar Roberg, will then address the audience on the latest developments within the association.
Once again, the afternoon program offers reviewed academic papers, this time looking at project management in the construction industry, as well as a series of sessions focussing on PMI and earning professional development units, and thought leader presentations on improving project management practices.
Invited international speaker,
Jürgen Oschadleus (pictured at left) will host a workshop called
Conversational Leadership: Building Influence Equity through Effective Everyday Communication.
On the Third and final day, the program sustains its momentum, beginning with a PMI update from one if the Institute’s directors,
Bruce Rodrigues. Dr Ginger Levin (pictured right) will be next, with her topic:
Using Knowledge Management to Move Forward in Project Management – Guidelines for Success. She also hosts a workshop in the afternoon dealing with the role of the PMO in Knowledge Management.
During the morning,
Jack van der Merwe, CEO for the Gautrain Management Agency will provide insights into this massive public transport project, which signals several ‘firsts’ for South Africa.
Frank Saladis will round off the morning session, and set the scene for the years ahead in his presentation called:
Your Future as a Project Manager.
The academic stream in the afternoon looks at best practices in project management and representatives of industry examine the available tools and methodologies used globally in project management. The day will close with the launch of two Special Interest Groups that will serve the needs of, and foster a community of project managers under two banners: Prince2 practitioners, and the Youth in Project Management.
The PMSA Conference is designed to bring international speakers to South Africa’s project managers at a local price, at the same time attracting project managers in other countries to deliver academic papers, learn and share experiences with their global counterparts. Delegates are primarily from South Africa but at each conference, an increasing number of project managers from other African countries, and developed and developing nations find value in attending.
