Dr. David E. Daniel, president of the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) has been announced as the opening keynote speaker for the 2nd Annual UT Dallas Project Management Symposium in August. The conference will be in the School of Management building on the UT Dallas campus in Richardson, Texas, USA during 18-19 August 2008.

Dr. Daniel is the fourth president of The University of Texas at Dallas. He received his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, and served on the faculty at UT Austin from 1980 to 1996. In 1996, he moved to the University of Illinois, finishing his service there as Dean of Engineering before being appointed UT Dallas' president in 2005.

Dr. Daniel’s professional work has focused on environmental controls for contaminated land and groundwater. He has published more than 100 technical articles and authored or edited five books. His work has been recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers, which awarded him its highest honor for papers published in its journals (the Norman Medal) and on two separate occasions awarded him its second highest honor, the Croes Medal. In 2000, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the nation’s most prestigious organization recognizing engineering achievement.

In 2005 through 2008, Dr. Daniel served as Chair of the External Review Panel of the American Society of Civil Engineers, which reviewed the facts surrounding the performance of New Orleans’ levees during Hurricane Katrina.

During Daniel’s presidency at UT Dallas, the university has undertaken a number of important projects, including a new $85 million science and engineering research building, designs on $220 million of additional buildings, a $30 million campus-enhancement program, a new undergraduate research program, and new living-learning communities for residential housing. During the same period, UT Dallas has raised the national recognition for its academic programs, raised more than $50 million of private funds, and won the national chess championships (several times).

The 2 Day Project Management Symposium in August will focus on topics important to organizations and industries in North Texas. The Conference will include an Opening Ceremony with Keynote Speakers, professional presentations, panel discussions, breaks in vendors’ exhibition areas, a Monday evening networking reception and a closing keynote address.

The Vendor Exhibition accompanying the August symposium will provide an opportunity for project management companies to showcase their solutions. Suppliers of PM products, services and technologies are invited to participate in this major event, expected to be one of the largest project management conferences in Texas this year. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Sponsors will receive maximum visibility at the school, will be featured on the conference website, will receive complimentary passes for employees, and will be recognized by the Project Management Program at UT Dallas for their support.
