Reported by Jaycee Krüger in South AfricaEvery second year, Project Management South Africa (PMSA) hosts a conference for South Africa’s project management professionals that offers delegates the opportunity for exposure to international thought leaders at a local conference price. A compelling programme brings together topical, trend related presentations, reviewed academic papers and industry case studies and best practices to deliver a bumper knowledge sharing opportunity over three full conference days.
This year, the PMSA conference, themed From Strategy to Reality, takes place at Gallagher Estate in Midrand from 26 to 28 May 2008 and features no less than four international speakers who will also facilitate interactive, outcomes-based seminars on different project management themes.
One of the international presenters,
Dr Ginger Levin, has long been associated with best practices in maturity assessments, metrics for project management, organisational change and knowledge management. She is the co-author of several books on these topics and holds the distinction of being the only person in the world to hold every certification conferred by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
At the PMSA Conference in 2008, Levin will pay particular attention to project management offices (PMOs). “The PMO used to be thought of as an entity that supported a single large project—often a project that was "projectized" in PMI's terms. Today, the PMO has assumed broader functions at the enterprise level and this means it is the leader in terms of portfolio and program management,” says Levin.
“While many PMOs serve as standard setting bodies, others may be an entity into which many, if not all, of the project manager’s report. Or, there are combinations of the two approaches. Today, we see PMOs reporting at high levels, or even the highest level, of private and public section organizations,” she adds.
This makes the PMO a highly relevant concept for public and private sector organisations running multiple projects. Levin’s seminar is designed to appeal to project professionals within such organisations who would benefit from knowing how to incorporate knowledge management into their daily lives using the PMO as the catalyst for this process.
Levin will not be the only speaker to address this increasingly popular topic.
Michael Reynders, Manager of the IT Project Office at Medi-Clinic will talk about his experience in establishing a PMO in his presentation on Day Two of the conference, titled: A Roadmap towards and Enterprise Project Office.
Other industry practitioners also have much to share on the topic.
John Hayden, from ABSA, South Africa’s leading retail bank, will look at the critical success factors for running an effective enterprise project office in a large company in his presentation in one of the topic-specific streams on Day Two (27 May).
Dr Veerendra Rai, from Tata Consultancy Services in India, in turn, brings another international perspective with his presentation on a Probable Structure Underlying PMO Functions.
