Reported by Miles Shepherd in LondonThe Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) announced that it is set to finalise an agreement with the Institute of International Engineering Project Management (IIEPM) at Tsinghua University Beijing, and The Research Centre for International Construction Economics and Management in Chongqing University (RCICEM), to deliver training programmes aimed at experienced construction professionals in China.
These programmes will equip candidates with the necessary skills, and training, to develop as a modern construction or project management professional operating in China at national and international levels.
Fabio Casula, The CIOB’s head of international commented: "These programmes have been created to respond to the demands for international professional training in construction in China, where we have a leading position as a professional body.
"China is undergoing massive infrastructure projects across many regions. The World Bank has predicted that by 2015 half of the world’s new building and construction will take place in China; our intention is to establish these programmes and then roll them out in other areas of China in the near future."
According to most reports Tsinghua is placed first of all the universities in China. It attracts the most talented students of the nation and enjoys the best engineering and applied sciences programs in China, occupying a position similar to Berkeley, MIT, and Stanford in the US. Given its standing, admission to Tsinghua is highly competitive. The majority of selected students are national scholars and among the brightest high school graduates in the country. Many of China's top scientists, engineers, politicians and business leaders are among Tsinghua alumni. The current Chinese president, Hu Jintao, is a former Tsinghua student who graduated with a degree in hydraulic engineering in 1964.
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) was formed in 1834 by a small group of London's master builders as the Builder Society. Its aim was to ‘to uphold and promote reputable standards of building through friendly intercourse, the useful exchange of information and greater uniformity and respectability in business’.
In 1884 the society was incorporated under the Companies Act as The Institute of Builders, with the principal objective ‘to promote excellence in the construction of buildings and just and honourable practice in the conduct of business’. Incorporation by Royal Charter was one of the objectives in the CIOB’s 1975-1980 Five Year Plan and, following extensive consultation with the membership, a petition was submitted to the Privy Council in January 1979. The Institute was granted a Royal Charter on 25 September 1980. CIOB represents on behalf of the public the most diverse set of professionals in the construction industry and has as its role:
- Promote the importance of the built environment.
- Lead the industry to create a sustainable future worldwide.
- Encourage leadership potential.
- Set the highest standards in quality, safety and qualification.
- Create an industry where excellence prospers.
