Reported by Miles Shepherd in the UK

The Association for Project Management (APM) has announced that Sir David Normingon will be a featured speaker at the 2008 APM Project Management Conference, "Success Through Projects" being held at the historic Brewery Conference Centre in London during 29-30 October 2008. He will speak on the importance of professional leadership development and role of professional programme and project management in the UK, from his personal experience and perspective.

Sir David Normington, KCB is Permanent Secretary, Home Office, Government of the United Kingdom, London. As Permanent Secretary, he chairs the Home Office Board and is responsible for the overall running of a department with over 27,000 employees and an annual expenditure of over £10 billion. He also sits on the Civil Service Steering Board, which seeks to set the overall direction of the Civil Service.

Sir David has a particular interest in leadership development and is a member of the Senior Leadership Committee.

The first 22 years of his civil service career were spent in the Department for Employment. In 1995 he became Director General for Schools and later, Permanent Secretary, at the newly-formed Department for Education and Skills. He has been in his current role since January 2006. A close examination of his career path through the Civil Service shows it follows the principles of Professional Skills for Government - long before it was thought of!
