Dr Jürgen Schloss, Program Director, PM@Siemens, Central Technology Division, Siemens AG, is honored, and continues: We are very proud that the outstanding achievement of our project team has been acknowledged with the IPMA Project Excellence Award in the mega-sized project category. The project was nominated after winning an internal award following the same principles, as we learned that the assessment of projects for such an award is very helpful for improving our project management methods. The project manager and his team are a great example for our global PM@Siemens community, as they proved that a systematic use of our methodologies combined with dedication and enthusiasm can overcome even very complex project set-ups and major challenges during execution. And most importantly: Thousands of travelers and air customers in Beijing enjoy the fast and reliable baggage delivery in one of the most advanced airports in the world. Dr Schloss can be contacted at Juergen.Schloss@siemens.com .

Siemens' Beijing Airport T3 Expansion Project (BATEP) arose from the huge passenger volume increase and expected added influx for the 2008 Olympics. The airport's Baggage Handling System (BHS) had to be one of the world's largest and most advanced to cope with projected growth. Siemens therefore designed the BHS with 68 kilometers of high-speed conveyors, belts and sorters, all controlled by Siemens' complex IT system. The BHS can process 19,200 pieces of baggage per hour.

Well Modernization Program, undertaken by Petrom EP, has been honored with the IPMA Project Excellence Award in the big-sized project category at the 23rd IPMA World Congress in Helsinki, Finland. Mr Umair Mir and Mr Herald Sharuga received the award, on behalf of the program, from Mrs Brigitte Schaden, President, IPMA, at the Refreshing Gala awards dinner at the Finlandia Hall on 16.6.2009.

The key targets in Petrom 2010 vision included improving company competitive position by reducing production costs and achieving production stability. Petrom owns over 9000 oil production wells, some with very high maintenance frequency, which results in high production costs. Were the mean time between consecutive failures improved from 25 days to 150+ days, Petrom could save over $ 130 million annually, a reduction in production cost of $ 2 / BOE. This reduction was possible by investing € 360 million and modernizing 5000 wells with high oil production in the course of two years. The scope of work included engineering, procurement, field execution (using approximately 50 sub-teams) and post modernization failure analysis.

Mr Roberto Mori, Vice President, IPMA, tells all nine finalists, i.e. bronze medalists, are recognized by the jury, chaired by Dr Thor Möller, as excellent projects characterized by outstanding project management and project results achieved. Having reached something extraordinary allows a project to be considered a prize winner, i.e. silver medalist. The award winners, i.e. gold medalists, are the projects with the most impressing performance and results. The jury decision is based on the assessments by purposely trained international assessor teams. The teams analyze the projects with reference to a well defined project excellence model, comprising 9 criteria and 22 sub-criteria. In addition to a holistic project management approach and excellent application of project management methods and tools, the customers, team members and other stakeholders need to be very satisfied, the key performance indicators excellent, and project achievements superb. Mr Mori can be contacted at Roberto.Mori@ipma.ch.

According to Mrs Schaden IPMA is the first international project management organization with a leadership role in the worldwide project management community. One major aim of IPMA is to improve the project management skills of project managers and to honor excellent project management. IPMA Project Excellence Awards are globally recognized. This is a benchmarking tool, based on the IPMA Project Excellence Model to enhance project management and to evaluate project achievements. Even the award process itself is a valuable experience for the applicants - for reflection, learning and personal enhancement. Mrs Schaden can be contacted at Brigitte.Schaden@ipma.ch.
