3rd UT Dallas Project Management Symposium opens with welcome & stories from Management School Dean Hasan Pirkul
Reported by Ann R. Miller and David Pells in Dallas

The 3rd Annual UT Dallas Project Management Symposium successfully opened on Thursday morning 13 August 2009 with a welcome by Mr. James Joiner, Director of the Graduate Program in Project Management at The UT Dallas and Mr. Hasan Pirkul, PhD, Dean of The UT Dallas School of Management. The conference, held in the School of Management on The UT Dallas campus in Richardson, Texas during 13-14 August 2009, was organized by the Graduate Program in Project Management (PM) in the School of Management's Executive Education Center at UT Dallas, in partnership with the Dallas Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) and PMForum.

The theme for this year's UT Dallas Project Management Symposium was "Managing in a Changing World". During his welcome speech, Dr. Pirkul (pictured right) told stories about his early days at UT Dallas and about the development of the new School of Management building (where the symposium was being held).

According to Dean Pirkul, "Project management is really an underutilized skill. Business schools don't do a good job, and have dropped the ball in this discipline. So I am happy to see this program developing so well here at the university. Welcome to UT Dallas, and have a good event!"

In addition to being Dean of the School of Management at The University of Dallas, Dr. Pirkul holds the Caruth Chair of Management. Prior to joining The UT Dallas, he was Director of Information Systems Programs and Founding Director of the Center for Information Technologies in Management at the Max M. Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University. He holds a BS degree in Industrial Engineering from Bogazici University, and M.S. in Management Science and PhD in Computer Information Systems from the University of Rochester.

Dr. Pirkul was followed on Thursday morning by keynote speakers James Reilly, PhD, recently retired US astronaut and Mr. Tom Leppert, Mayor of the City of Dallas. (see separate breaking news articles about their speeches). Other events on 13 August included 24 professional presentations in five streams by project management experts and professional practitioners. The day ended with a networking reception for participants in the atrium in the School of Management. Official attendance on day one was approximately 225, slightly more than last year's symposium.
