ESC Lille EDEN Doctoral Symposium Launched
Reported by Miles Shepherd from Lille, France

Prof Christophe Bredillet, Dean for Postgraduate Programmes (left), launched the annual EIASM Doctoral Symposium on Project Management at ESC Lille on Monday, 17 August. A range of world famous academics were present as Prof Bredillet outlined the purpose of the symposium on the Attributes of Projects.

Prof Dov Dvir (Ben Gurion University, right) opened the external presentations with his ideas on 'Application Area in Practice' and he was followed by Prof Graham Winch (Manchester Business School) who discussed 'Life-cycle in Practice'.

The remainder of the first day was devoted to presentations by doctoral students, including Thomas Beidenbach from Umeå School of Business who discussed his work on organizing the early project phases in pharmaceutical and biotechnology projects where frequent innovation takes place. Nadila Gerashcenko from the National University of Construction and Architecture, Kiev, then presented her work which has concentrated on social development projects and the implications for the social sphere on the special characteristics of such projects.

A critical social perspective was taken by Ana Müller and Arnd Görner in discussing the projectification of organizational work, a topic that has occupied many researchers in recent years. The morning session was completed by Ron Basu of the Henley Management College who presented his work on project quality and project excellence, offering a practical perspective to enable practitioners to make use of methods to improve the project process.

The August 2009 Doctoral Seminar has two main aims: first, to provide a forum for doctoral students in project management from Europe and around the world where they can share experiences and exchange information related to theoretical paradigms, research and literature in project management; and second, to introduce doctoral students in project management to the system of classification of projects developed by professors Lynn Crawford, Brian Hobbs and Rodney Turner.

EIASM offers a limited number of scholarships which are limited to students from EIASM Institutional Members. Allocation of scholarships at the discretion of the European Institute.

Editor's note: This is one of several news reports from Lille, as we have several advisors and stakeholders participating in this important global seminar. Our apologies for redundancy in coverage, but feel that various perspectives are also interesting and useful.
