According
to news from CH2M HILL, a global engineering and construction project
management firm, the company has completed a 27.5 mile (44.25 km)
tundra ice road on the North Slope of Alaska. The project was completed
on January 4, 2010, 11 days ahead of schedule and on-budget.
Savant
Alaska, LLC hired CH2M HILL to be the lead contractor for the Badami
Unit Redevelopment Project, 2009-2010 Tundra Winter road. The road was
needed to transport equipment from the North Slope of Alaska to the
Badami oil field, including a 2.5 million pound (1.32 million kilos)
drilling rig.
A completed ice road ranges from a minimum of
six inches thick to five feet at river and road crossings. It is made
by mixing snow and ice with water making a solid, stable base coating
to protect the tundra. An ice road is used to ensure that there is no
damage to the environment while transporting materials to remote
drilling sites. The road was built in 32 days with no safety incidents
or impact to the environment and 70 days sooner than the sea ice route
constructed in 2009 by a competitor.
"CH2M HILL is proud to
safely deliver projects in some of the world's most challenging
environments," said
Garry Higdem, president, CH2M HILL Energy Division.
"We are very pleased to work with Savant Alaska on this important
project and are proud of our team's outstanding performance."
