According
to Wikipedia,
Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a
landlocked alpine country of roughly 7.7 million people (2009) in
Western Europe with an area of 41,285 km². Switzerland is a federal
republic consisting of 26 states, called cantons. Bern is the seat of
the federal authorities, while the country's economic centres are its
three global cities, Geneva, Basel and Zürich.
Switzerland is
one of the richest countries in the world by per capita gross domestic
product, with a nominal per capita GDP of $67,384. Zürich and Geneva
have respectively been ranked as having the second and third highest
quality of life in the world.
Switzerland
is bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the
south and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east. Switzerland is
multilingual and has four national languages: German, French, Italian
and Romansh. The oldest traces of human existence in Switzerland date
back about 150,000 years. The oldest known settlements in Switzerland,
which were found at Gächlingen, have been dated to around 5300 BC. The
official establishment of Switzerland is traditionally dated to 1
August 1291.
Switzerland has a long history of being neutral (it
has not been in a foreign war since 1815) and therefore hosts various
international organizations, including the Red Cross, the World Trade
Organization and one of the U.N.'s two European offices. It is not a
member of the European Union, but it is part of the Schengen Agreement.
With
an area of 41,285 square kilometers (15,940 sq mi), Switzerland is a
relatively small country. The population is about 7.7 million,
resulting in an average population density of 182 people per square
kilometer (472/sq mi). The more mountainous southern half of the
country is more sparsely populated. Switzerland has a prosperous and
stable modern market economy, with a nominal per capita GDP that is
higher than those of the big western European economies, United States
and Japan, though on a PPP basis, it ranks tenth. The World Economic
Forum's Global Competitiveness Report currently ranks Switzerland's
economy as the most competitive in the world. For much of the 20th
century, Switzerland was the wealthiest country in Europe.

Several
of the world's largest companies are headquartered in Switzerland,
including Nestle, UBS AG, Credit Suisse, Novartis, ABB, and Swatch.
Switzerland is ranked the sixth most powerful economy in the world.
Banking, tourism, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals are important
industries in Switzerland. The manufacture of precision instruments for
engineering is important, as are watch making and the biological
sciences industries.
In recent years, the Swiss have brought
their economic practices largely into conformity with those of the
European Union in many ways, in an effort to enhance their
international competitiveness. The economy has been growing at around
3% per year. Full EU membership is a long-term objective of some in the
Swiss government, but there is considerable popular sentiment against
this.
The western French-speaking areas tend to be more
pro-EU. Apart from agriculture, economic and trade barriers between the
European Union and Switzerland are minimal and Switzerland has free
trade agreements worldwide. Switzerland is a member of the European
Free Trade Association (EFTA). [1]
Geneva is the
second-most-populous city in Switzerland and is the most populous city
of the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Situated where the Rhône
River exits Lake Geneva, it is the capital of the Republic and Canton
of Geneva. The city proper had a population of 186,825 in June 2008,
and the metropolitan area had 1,240,000 residents in 2007. Geneva is a
worldwide centre for diplomacy and international co-operation, and is
widely regarded as a global city, mainly because of the presence of
numerous international organizations, including the headquarters of
many of the agencies of the United Nations and the Red Cross. It is
also the place where the Geneva Conventions were signed, which chiefly
concern the treatment of wartime non-combatants and prisoners of war.

Geneva
has been described as the world's seventh most important financial
centre by the Global Financial Centres Index, and a 2009 survey by
Mercer found Geneva to have the third-highest quality of life in the
world. The city has been referred to as the world's most compact
metropolis and the "Peace Capital". Geneva first appeared in history in
121 B.C. [2]
Geneva's economy is mainly based on services. The
city has an important and old finance sector, which is specialized in
private banking and financing of international trade. It is also an
important centre of commodity trade. Geneva hosts the international
headquarters of a number of large multinational companies and many
others have their European headquarters in the city. Hewlett Packard
has its Europe, Africa, and Middle East headquarters in Meyrin, near
Geneva.
There is a long tradition of watchmaking in the city
where many famous Swiss brands are based. Two major international
producers of flavours and fragrances, Firmenich and Givaudan, have
their headquarters and main production facilities in Geneva. Many
people also work in the numerous offices of international organisations
located in Geneva (about 24,000 in 2001). In 2009, Geneva was ranked as
the fourth
most expensive city in the world. [2]
