Reported by Jouko Vaskimo in HelsinkiPoyry PLC has been awarded
an urban development design contract by the
Millennium Challenge
Account, Burkina Faso (MCA Burkina Faso). The Pöyry assignment
comprises the design for implementation of 17 communal buildings in
towns throughout the country as well as improvements to market
infrastructure for nine market sites in southwestern and northwestern
Burkina Faso. The value of the contract is approximately 3.0 million €
and includes options for an additional 30 communal building sites as
well as construction supervision works for all construction sites.
Pöyry is working with MCA Burkina Faso who has signed a contract with
the Millennium Challenge Corporation. For further information please

Pöyry anticipates the completion
of the study and design phase by September 2011. The design services
will begin with socio-economic planning studies for the market sites.
Feasibility studies will be carried out as well as environmental impact
assessments and resettlement action plans following relevant national
legislation and international guidelines for all sites. The final
infrastructure design will assure that the needs of beneficiary
communities are fully taken into account.
Mr
Sven Bolomey, the
Pöyry Infra AG project manager underlines this as a major project
challenge: "Our major challenge will be assuring that our
infrastructure solutions are adapted to the needs of local stakeholders
and accepted by local populations. A particularly sensitive issue is
the rehabilitation of local markets, which are a key economic and
social platform in local towns and villages. Our infrastructure
solutions must take into account specific cultural and social aspects
as well as ensure the durability of constructions and economic
sustainability. Our project team, which is composed of international
and national experts, will work closely with the MCA Burkina Faso as
well as with local municipalities, communities and stakeholders to
ensure that our design is adapted and feasible."
According to Mr
Bolomey, Pöyry has many years of project experience in Burkina Faso as
well as throughout the West African region: "With immense
infrastructure needs, the African continent as a whole has a great
potential for business development. Pöyry Infra AG is looking to
increase its presence in Africa by focusing on countries which are
carrying out economic and structural reforms which facilitate
investment in infrastructure projects. Transportation and Urban
infrastructure are high on the continents list of priorities. Through
Pöyry's network of offices and experience, we are well placed to meet
the continents increasing needs and support our Clients throughout the
project life cycle."
Burkina
Faso is a non-coastal nation in West Africa. It is surrounded by six
countries: Mali in the north, Niger in the east, Benin in the
southeast, Togo and Ghana in the south, and Côte d'Ivoire in the
southwest. Such a geographical position increases the need for
transportation infrastructure. (graphics courtesy

The
area of Burkina Faso is 274,000 km², and the estimated population over

Republic of Upper Volta, it was
renamed on August 4th 1984 by the then President
Thomas Sankara to mean
the land of upright people in Moré and Dioula, the main native
languages of the country. The inhabitants of Burkina Faso are known as
Burkinabè.
The
capital of Burkina Faso is
Ouagadougou. Having gained independence from
France in 1960, the country went through several governmental changes
until arriving at its current form, a semi-presidential republic. The

Blaise Compaoré. The country occupies the sixth to last
place on the Human Development Index.
Despite being one of the
poorest countries in the world with an estimated GDP of 1200 USD/capita
in 2008, Burkina Faso is rated one of the leading economic reformers by
the World Bank
Doing Business 2010 publication. Burkina Faso is a
regional hub for multilateral and bilateral funding agencies and is
seeing an increase in private sector investment, particularly in the
mining sector. With 90 % of the labor force active in the agricultural
