Tom Sheives, PhD, PMP, project management author and coach with True Solutions, Inc, who is also an international correspondent for PMForum in North Texas, was the featured speaker at the monthly dinner meeting of the PMI Dallas Chapter on 4 February 2010. The meeting was attended by approximately 250 PMI Dallas Chapter members and guests. Tom spoke on the topic of "Project Teams Unstuck! High Performing Multicultural Teams."
According to Tom, "The makeup of teams is constantly changing, creating unique challenges for teams to perform at the championship level that is demanded in today's workplace and economy. Multicultural and virtual teams are the norm!"
"Is your project team stuck?" he asks. "Are you performing consistently at championship levels? Are there disconnects between team members? Are there team members that you just don't understand? Why do they act and react the way that they do?"
"Cultural and behavioral norms are being challenged at an all time high in the workplace," he stated. "Multi-national, multigenerational, and cross functional teams whether collocated or virtual are growing at significant rates and challenging traditional styles and modes of behavior and communication. Cross functional teams are demanding that barriers be removed, department silos be blown up and results achieved."
Tom's speech was intended to provide project manager's with a framework to analyze, understand, and get their multicultural teams unstuck! Tom presented some fresh ideas on culture that most of us have experienced but might not have completely figured out.
