Reported by Ann R. Miller and David Pells in DallasThe
4
th Annual UT Dallas Project Management Symposium was held during 12-13
August 2010 in the School of Management on The UT Dallas campus in
Richardson, Texas. The symposium was organized by the Graduate Program
in Project Management (PM) in the School of Management's Executive
Education Center at UT Dallas, in partnership with the Dallas Chapter
of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) and PMForum.
Day
two of the symposium began with a keynote presentation by
David
Neumann, Dallas City Councilman for District 3 and Chairman of the
Trinity River Corridor Project for the City of Dallas. The $2 Billion
Trinity River Corridor Project is the most complex and the largest
urban development effort ever undertaken by the City of Dallas. It is
expected to transform a flood protection solution into opportunities
for community revitalization and economic development, and the creation
of a world-class greenway.
The project will turn the Trinity
River's path through the city of Dallas into a collection of sports
fields, trails, nature centers, and recreational opportunities. At
10,000 acres (including the Great Trinity Forest, which at 6,000 acres
(24 km2) is the largest urban bottomland forest in the world), it has
been billed as the largest urban park in the United States. The Trinity
River Corridor Project is a threefold venture: to protect downtown
Dallas against future flooding, to improve transportation through the
congested downtown district, and to provide a place for relaxation and
play for downtown residents who currently have limited outdoor
recreational opportunities

According
to Mr. Neumann, major sub-projects include the Dallas Floodway
Extension Project, Trinity Corridor Transportation Improvements,
Trinity River Bridges (three signature Calatrava bridges over the
Trinity River), Trinity Trails, Great Trinity Forest (including
Interpretive Center and Equestrian Center), Texas Buckeye Trail, and
Long Term Land Use Planning. These are just the public funded projects;
many other economic and property development projects are being planned
by the private sector.
David A. Neumann was elected to the
Dallas City Council in June, 2007 to represent District 3 which is
comprised of the 110,000 residents of Oak Cliff, West Dallas, and
Mountain Creek. The Mayor appointed Mr. Neumann to serve as Chairman of
the Trinity River Corridor Project Committee of the Dallas City Council.
Other
events on 13 August included 15 professional presentations over five
streams by 18 project management experts and professional
practitioners, three panel discussions and closing keynote
presentations by Miles Shepherd, chair of the IPMA Executive Board, and
Steven Fahrenkrog, PMI Vice President for Regional Development. The day
ended with drawings for door prizes. Official attendance at the
symposium was approximately 260. To see the full program, visit
