Day Two Highlights from 4th UT Dallas Project Management Symposium

The 4th Annual UT Dallas Project Management Symposium concluded on Friday 13 August 2010 after two days that featured five keynote presentations; 45 professional presentations by 53 project management leaders; three panel discussions, networking sessions; and opening and closing ceremonies. The symposium, which was held in the School of Management on The UT Dallas campus in Richardson, Texas, was organized by the Graduate Program in Project Management (PM) in the School of Management's Executive Education Center at UT Dallas, in partnership with the Dallas Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) and PMForum.

Here is a summary of the second day of the symposium:

Friday morning began with a keynote presentation by David Neumann (pictured at right), Dallas City Councilman and Chair of the Trinity River Corridor Project for the City of Dallas. He provided an overview and status report on this massive project, (to see previously published article about Mr. Neumann's presentation, click here.) David Neumann's presentation was followed by four hours of professional presentations over five tracks.

  • Network or Not Work, What's It Gonna Be?, by Ken Sharp
  • The IT Project Management Office and Roadmap for Corporate Governance, by Jim Miller (pictured right)
Three presentations in the Project Governance track:

  •  Financial Benefits of PPM for a Healthcare Organization, by Nayan Patel and Mohamad Safa
  • Patterns in Governance of Programs and Projects, by Prabu Ayyagari
  • Building Connections Between Community, Non-Profit and Government Programs, by Pamela Stevenson

  • The Future of Project Management - Panelists: John Cole, PMI Dallas Chapter President, Stacy Goff, president of the American Society for the Advancement of Project Management (asapm), and Miles Shepherd, Chair of the International Project Management Association (IPMA). Moderator: Jim Joiner, Symposium Chair and former Director of the Graduate Program in Project Management at UT Dallas.
IPMA and PMI Leaders Share the Stage During Closing Plenary Session

Miles Shepherd, Chair of the Executive Board of IPMA, delivered the first closing keynote presentation on the topic of "Standards in Project Management - A Brake or An Accelerator?" Steven L. Fahrenkrog, PMI Vice President for Regional Development, delivered the second closing keynote presentation on the topic of "Embedding Project Management in the Enterprise." Once again, top leaders from the world's two largest project management professional associations shared the stage at the annual UT Dallas PM Symposium, a rare occurrence in the project management world.
