PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA - April 08, 2008 -- AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, announces today that it has acquired the assets of Smith Williams Consultants, Inc. (SWC).
SWC is a US-based, 36-person, civil, geotechnical, water resources and construction engineering firm primarily serving the mining sector. It is headquartered in a major US centre for mining -Denver, Colorado- and has a satellite office in Elko, Nevada, another mining-centric location.
SWC has worked on more than 140 mining engineering projects on five continents. Projects have included engineering design, review and construction of more than 75 heap leach pads with an aggregate synthetically lined area of more than 1.2 billion square feet and 60 tailings storage facilities with an aggregate storage capacity of more than 6 billion tons.
"The mining sector is one of our target growth areas and the addition of the specialist services of Smith Williams adds significant strength to our mining practice, especially in the United States," said William Brickey, Senior Vice President with AMEC's Earth and Environmental division.
"The addition of the SWC team fits our global strategy extremely well," added Michael Davies, Vice President and leader of the Earth and Environmental division's mining sector. "Strengths they bring include several elite senior technical experts who are known and respected throughout the mining industry."
"Our clients will benefit greatly with the addition of AMEC's broad resources, technical capabilities and environmental expertise," said Mike Smith, President of SWC. "This partnership will open new opportunities for our mining practice while improving the level of services currently enjoyed by our valued clients. We are excited at the prospects with the merger and the resources that will be immediately available to us."
