London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom (UK).  An important settlement for nearly two millennia, London is an international leader in global finance, business, politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and the arts.  It is considered one of the world’s major global cities.  London is also one of the largest and most populated cities in Europe.  The city is an international transport hub and popular tourist destination.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, usually shortened to the United Kingdom, UK or Britain, is a country located off the northwest coast of mainland Europe.  The UK is a political union of the four constituent countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  The UK also has several overseas territories and dependences.

A constitutional monarchy, the UK has close relationships with 15 other “commonwealth realms” that share the same monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II, as head of state.  A member of the G8, the UK is a highly developed country with the fourth largest domestic product in the world.

With a population of 60 million, it is the third most populous country in the European Union and is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United Nations (UN), where it holds a permanent seat on the Security Council.  The UK is also one of the world’s major nuclear powers and has an economy of approximately US$1.8 trillion.  As the successor state to the British Empire, the UK retains influence throughout the world due to the extensive use of the English language, as well as through the world-spanning Commonwealth of Nations, which is ceremoniously led by the UK. Needless to say, London and the UK are the source or sponsor of many programmes and projects, both in the UK and worldwide. The Association of Project Management (APM) in the UK has been one of the world's leading professional associations for advancing project management for over 30 years.
