Is Project Management a Profession? If not, what is it?

Bill Zwerman and Janice Thomas concluded recently that “project management is not now perceived to be a profession, nor is it likely to become so in the near future”. (Zwerman, Bill L. and Thomas, Janice L. et al Professionalization of Project Management: Exploring the Past to Map the Future. Project Management Institute, 2004)

Follow on research is being conducted by Paul D. Giammalvo, CDT, PMP, CCE, MScPM, PhD Candidate, under the supervision of Dr. Christophe N. Bredillet, PMP, CCE, IPMA Level 3, Lille Graduate School of Management (ESC-Lille)

What do you think? If Project Management is NOT a profession, then what is it?
