The Cranfield MSc in Project Management provides an internationally recognised qualification for project managers. The aim of the course is to develop in the student an ability to assess and analyse evidence and then to make and implement appropriate decisions.

The programme runs concurrently with the full-time MBA programme and for the first two terms, participants follow the MBA core programme, increasing their knowledge of the basic business disciplines. In term three students take modules of generic project management topics designed to cover the complete life-cycle and processes of projects, from raising finance to day-to-day control. Subject areas include strategy, finance and execution; marketing, bidding and proposals; control and information systems; culture and the environment; project organisational behaviour; industrial business law. In term four students can select tightly focused project management electives which meet individual and company needs, and undertake a project dissertation.

Centre For Research in the Management of Projects

The Centre for Research in the Management of Projects (CRMP) will focus on providing answers to the issues which really affect project performance today. The Centre's emphasis is on ensuring that all who participate in the project do so efficiently and profitably, and that the result gives clients and other "stakeholders" results that they value. At the heart of the Centre's research activities is the effective management of project and business processes.

The Centre runs three M.Sc. taught courses in project management. It also undertakes a number of highly focused in-company training programmes, and runs periodic special seminars and short courses. The harnessing of this wide range of intellectual skills and experience will provide a powerful one-stop research and teaching resource for any organisation with ambitions to improve its understanding, processes, systems and performance in the management of projects.

Project Management Virtual Education
University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology Centre For Research on the Management of Projects

The University of Manchester (United Kingdom) in partnership with Norsk Hydor, Statoil, Norwegian School of Management, Norwegian Technical University, University of Calagary launched two pilot courses in an Intranet-based Project Management Education Programme. The courses are at two levels, Basic and Advanced. The Basic level is targeted towards engineers, economists with varying experience in project management or project execution.

Basic Programme

The Basic programme consists of a Virtual (Intranet delivered) Introduction followed by a concentrated mix of Plenary and Virtual sessions over a period of 15 weeks. The planned demands on the students’ time are Virtual Introduction16 student hours.

The Intranet enable the students to access the learning material at any time and from any location, but each section includes assignments to be completed by milestone dates.

Staff of the UMIST Centre for Research in the Management of Projects are responsible for the Keynote ‘lecture’ and the ‘lectures’ and assignments on Sourcing & Procurement, Risk Management, Project Quality Management, ValueManagement, Environment, Health & Safety, and Culture & International Projects.

Company Support

The "students" must be nominated by and have strong support from their companies. The participating companies’ professional resources are involved in the teaching and the development of cases. Qualified people from the companies are trained and used as students’ mentors.
