Election Season - How Politics Affect Projects!
by Ana Maria Rodriguez PM World Today International Correspondent, Argentina
“Politics: is the process by which groups make decisions. Although the term is generally applied to behavior within governments, politics is observed in all human (and many non-human) group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions”. (Wikipedia)
As I was taught during the first lessons of Project Management I have attended, Projects always require agreements between people affected by it, projects always involve decision-making processes. Projects always require politics. However, in this article I will focus my analysis in government politics: What to expect in election season regarding Projects? How do Politics affect Projects? Are there any means for Project Managers to reduce these effects? Although my analysis is based on Argentina’s actual politics, things might be fairly similar in many other places of the world.

VI International Seminar Exceededed All Expectations
by Alcides Santopietro, PM World Today International Correspondent, Brazil
Brazil currently holds thirteen chapters of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) with over 4,000 members in total. There has been an exponential membership growth rate over the last few years and the huge amount of professionals have been demanding more and more value-added from PMI®.
That’s the scenario. If we look at the recent past in the country, we can confirm the increasing level of interest by checking recent events promoting the project management profession in Brazil: the “4th ‘Ibero-Americano’ Congress” (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, 2003), “V International Project Management Seminar” (São Paulo, 2005, with over 500 attendees), “I Project Management Brazilian Congress (Florianópolis, 2006, with nearly 600 attendees). People around the country are being joined to listen to experts, case studies, and academic papers, and to participate in workshops and interactive sessions. It is easy to find events with over one or two hundred attendees discussing project management in some aspect.

Great Expectations After Standard & Poors (S&P) Good Grade for Argentina
by Ana Maria Rodriguez PM World Today International Correspondent, Argentina
Last Wednesday, Argentina's long-term dept was upgraded from B to B+, by Standard & Poor's. In other words, according to (S&P) Argentina is moving forward for recovering investor's trust in the country.
This is the second time in the present year that S&P's grade for argentina is increased, reaching the same level the country had at March 2001. Then, the grade was accompanied by an observation for "negative
perspective". This time, S&P announces an "Stable Outlook" for Argentina 2007.
S&P has announced that the upgrade for Argentina is due to the growth of the external liquidity for the country, and a reduction on its foreign dept. The perspectiva S&P finds for Argentina 2007 is of constant
growth for the GIP. S&P suggests to be careful with the public expenses of the country, in order to reduce the fluctuations of economy.

Great Week for Projects in Argentina
by Ana Maria Rodriguez PM World Today International Correspondent, Argentina
During the last week multi-million dollar projects in Argentina were announced, President Nestor Kirchner signed the contract award for the construction of two thermo electrical facilities in two main industrial
regions, and the construction of a 5-Star Hotel & Casino in Rosario began. The improving Economy in Argentina is leading to an increase in the number and size of projects to be developed soon.

As expected after long- term dept was upgraded from B to B+, by Standard & Poor's and reported by PMForum.org on October 5th, investments in local industries are being announced by important companies. Louis Dreyfus,
one of the world's largest merchandisers of grains and oilseeds, announced last Friday the investment of more than 45 million dollars for the improvement of its plant in Timbues, 30km north or Rosario, Argentina.
Investments include projects for increasing the production of high-protein content flours and the storage capacity up to 100,000 tons, and the construction of a new wharf. A new bio diesel production facility is also part
of the expansion plan; the facility will generate 300 thousands tons per year of this fuel as a means to reduce production risks due to lack of energy in the region. Louis Dreyfus' projects are expected to begin as soon
as possible.
