Project Management Book Recomendations and Lists

Max WidemanMax Wideman, Publisher of the Wideman's Project Management Wisdom and Author of the Wideman Glossary of Comparative Project Management Terms suggests the following list of general reference project management books.

"For a general simple reference I would suggest "Project Management Memory Jogger, A Pocket Guide for Project Teams" by Paula Martin, or "On Time/On Budget, A Step-by-Step Guide for Managing Any Project" by Sunny and Kim Baker.

For a much more comprehensive reference, see Kerzner's "Project Management, A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling and Controlling." For the most advanced thinking on project management, see "Visualizing Project Management, A Model for Business and Technical Success", by Hal Mooz, et al."
On Software Project Management Books

Glen AllemanGlen B. Alleman Principal Consultant with Niwotridge Consulting writes...

"The following is a list of books, articles, and other references I regularly use in my consulting practice. This list is far from exhaustive, but represents a working set of knowledge about system architecture, software design, and the management of software development projects.

I continuously add to this list as I discover new material. With a nearly unlimited number of resources in cyberspace, it is not only impossible to keep up, it is also very difficult to sort out the good from the not so good. My test of goodness is "does this make sense to me?," and "can I actually confirm that the concepts in the material can be used in practice with measurable results?" The following list has served me well over time."

Harvey LevineHarvey Levine Author and project management knowledge expert writes...

"I have no doubt than my craft has been strengthened by dozens of these visionaries; men and women who have had the foresight to see the forest for the trees and the courage to carry their message to the masses.

During my four decades practicing in the field of project management, I have been influenced by a number of visionaries. These include people who have made major contributions to a wide body of knowledge that I have found to be useful in plying my trade.

My personal library is stocked with the published works of these giants who have made a difference in the way that we manage. Most of these are not "project management" books, but rather books that address the issues that we all face, in any discipline. This broader understanding is essential, as we cannot be successful in our project management endeavors by just applying the technical practices of project management.

In the project management arena, we deal with more than scheduling and cost control. We have to also excel in problem solving and decision making, in communication, and in all those "people skills" that help us to work together and to get the most out of our efforts. Of the hundreds of management books have been published on these topics, the books that I have selected here all have a direct bearing on how we can be successful in the practice of project management."
