THE AMA HANDBOOK OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT
edited by Paul Dinsmore and Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin

a book review by Hugh Woodward

The AMA Handbook of Project Management purports to be the authoritative guide to project management and the impressive list of authors confirms the claim. There are 37 chapters presenting the critical concepts and theories, all written by recognized experts. pmforum.org readers will recognize Dr. Alan Stretton, who authored “Bodies of Knowledge and Competency Standards in Project Management”; Professor Peter Morris, who authored “Initiation Strategies for Managing Major Projects”; Muhamed Abdomerovic, who authored “Project Cost Management in Practice”; and David Hillson, who authored “Risk Management in Practice”.

The book targets a broad audience. In addition to practicing project managers, it provides a ready reference for anyone involved in project tasks, including upper management executives, project sponsors, functional managers, and team members. Discussion questions are provided at the end of each chapter for use in a classroom environment.

The AMA Handbook of Project Management first tackles the basics of project management, including the fundamental disciplines and processes required to ensure that projects are brought to successful completion. It then moves to highlighting the latest trends from a global perspective, considering ethics, professionalism, and career development.

The book is organized in five sections:

As Dr. David Cleland asserts in the Foreword: “This is a book that should have a conspicuous place on the bookshelf of anyone who wants to improve their professional practice in the use of project management knowledge and skills.”
