Total Quality Management in the US Department of Energy, in particular the Quality Self Assessment Approach is of use during an examination of a company or public organization's project management processes.
The ISO Quality Management Forum, is a contact for the International Standards Organization with information on current and evolving standards and interpretation of ISO requirements for management of a project management organization. The ISO 9000 series of standards deal with quality systems that can be used for external quality assurance purposes. In particular "ISO 9004- Part 6 Guidelines to quality in project management " ... " gives guidance on those quality concepts, practices and systems for which the implementation of project management is important to and has and impact on the practice of project management "
MIL-STD-498 and its 22 DIDs were approved for use December 5, 1994. Two guidebooks supporting MIL-STD-498 were released in January 1996: Overview & Tailoring, and Application & Reference.
EIA and IEEE published a commercial version of MIL-STD-498 in January 1996 titled EIA/IEEE Interim Standard, Standard for Information Technology, Software Life Cycle Processes, Software Development, Acquirer-Supplier Agreement, (Intended for Trial Use), J-STD-016-1995. EIA and IEEE are developing a commercial replacement for MIL-STD-498, US Draft 12207-1996, which will be the U.S. implementation of ISO/IEC , Information technology - Software life cycle processes, 1995-08-01. See the MIL-STD Archives.
ISO/IEC 12207 standard provides a complete framework for the acquisition, supply, development, operation, and maintenance of software. In addition, the standard contains a framework for managing, controlling, and improving software life cycle activities.
The standard's primary importance is that it provides a reference basis for emerging engineering standards, such as program management, quality assurance, verification and validation, configuration management and metrics. The adaptation of ISO/IEC 12207 by ANSI/IEEE/EIA in the USA is expected to be completed by December 1996. DOD is expected to adopt IS 12207 and the other emerging standards as part of a phased transition.
