Areas of Project Management Application - Government

The Center for Technology in Government

The Center for Technology in Government pursues new ways of applying computing and communications technologies to the practical problems of information management and service delivery in the public sector. The Center's program seeks to reduce the costs and improve the quality of government services, reduce the risks of innovation, and share the results of its projects throughout the public sector. This mission is conducted through partnerships, problem solving and knowledge building.

The Center's projects are carried out through strategic partnerships among government agencies, technology corporations, and university faculty and students. Projects conducted in the Center focus on the main factors that affect the success of innovative uses of information technology, management, technology, and policy. Each project begins with the construction of a comprehensive model of the underlying business problem and a rigorous cost-performance analysis to understand both the nature of the problem and the potential impact of technology. As a result of this activity, processes are redesigned and appropriate technologies and their expected impact on the process are identified.

Specific project results may suggest more general frameworks and guidelines for applying technology to any public agency with similar problems. CTG actively shares lessons with government and private-sector organizations through public demonstrations, practical handbooks, formal reports, seminars, and dissemination through the World Wide Web. "Making Smart IT Choices" is a downloadable guide to CTG's methodology.
