US DoD - Software Program Managers Network

The Mission of the Software Program Managers Network is to enable managers of large-scale, software intensive development or maintenance projects to more effectively manage and succeed by identifying and conveying to them management Best Practices, lessons-learned, and direct support.

The Software Program Managers Network, in which project offices from all services and OSD agencies participate, is a fundamental mechanism for improving the acquisition of large-scale software systems by identifying highly-effective practices from industry and government, and conveying them to software managers and practitioners. These best practices directly address the underlying cost and schedule drivers that cause software to be delivered over budget, late, and with diminished performance capability.

SEI Software Engineering Information Repository

The Software Engineering Information Repository (SEIR) is a Web-based repository of information on software engineering practices that have been demonstrated to lead to improved organizational performance. The SEIR is designed to serve the software engineering community in the role of gathering, coordinating, analyzing, and disseminating data and information on the impact of software engineering practices and innovations leading to improvement.

The initial focus of the SEIR is on the Capability Maturity Model (CMM)(sm)-based software process improvement data and information. Users can read frequently asked questions (FAQs), general information, and view analyses of assessment results. Most of the information in the SEIR comes from organizations that have conducted assessments or appraisals and reported their findings to the SEI. The initial information "domains" are:

"Future capabilities of the SEIR will include an expanded focus on additional domains, and a greater depth and breadth of available information. There will be increased interactive functionality, allowing users to "drill-down" into the information and create custom charts based on the type of information they want. In addition, benchmarking capabilities will be added. However, the future success of the SEIR depends on involvement and participation from the community. For the SEIR to be the most useful, it's vital that the community help populate the repository. Specifically, if your organization has lessons learned, case studies, or examples of how you're implementing software practices and technologies, the SEIR team would appreciate your contributions. We would also like to hear about the value that organizations are receiving from process improvement activities and from implementing specific software technologies."

While access to the SEIR is free, all users must register to use the repository. This helps in reducing unnecessary use of the server by targeting customers in the software engineering community who are interested in this information and in providing a level of security when gathering data.

The Institute for Information Technology Software Engineering Group

The IIT Software Engineering Group performs research and development in software engineering. Software engineering is taken to mean all the practical aspects of developing and supporting software, from project initiation through first delivery, maintenance, and evolution. The objective of the research is to develop tools and techniques to assist Canadian companies whose principal product is software to improve their processes and products. Collaboration with companies who can use or commercialize such tools and techniques is emphasized.

Software Engineering is one of seven research groups that make up the NRC Institute for Information Technology. The Group is located in Ottawa and currently has eleven permanent scientific and technical staff with a number of temporary staff. Program areas are real-time and embedded systems, commercial software products, large scale systems

Project Management Institute - Software Survey

The Project Management Institute's Project Management Software Survey offers an efficient way to compare and contrast the capabilities of a variety of project management tools. More than 200 software tools are listed, with comprehensive information on system features how time, resource, cost, and performance analyses are performed, details on cost reporting, and how, or if, each package handles multiple projects, project tracking and charting.
