The New Editor's Vision For the PMI Project Management Journal Mission statement My goal, as new editor for the Project Management Journal, is very simple: make it a "tier one" academic journal within 3 years. Beyond the necessary marketing aspects, the key is obviously the quality of PMJ as such. We have to be able to attract the best papers internationally and to do so we need a strong International Review Board and a clear editorial policy. International Review Board I am presently working at constituting a new international Review Board with the following organization, beside the editor: An Advisory Board of 4 to 8 "associate" editors. An Editorial Review Team of about 30/40 international colleagues. The Advisory Board will be chosen by combining either: areas of research specialization, the idea being here to be able to address each kind of epistemological perspective (from positivism to radical constructivism), research paradigms (from empiricism, situational to phenomenology), research methods (from qualitative to quantitative) and intentionality (knowing, explaining, acting, changing); various disciplines: organizational behavior and theory, strategic management, sociology, economics, political science, history, information science, systems theory, communication theory, and psychology. Geographical areas, as internationalization is still an issue in "English speaking" publications. (See for instance "From the editors, Publishing across Borders: furthering the Internationalization of AMJ, Academy of Management Journal, 2003, Vol. 46, N°. 6, 679-683). The idea here is to embark leading people from different parts of the world, and thus being attractive for local researchers in term of submitting their papers and reading PMJ. The members of the Advisory Board must be academics (PhD, and if possible Professors) An Editorial Review Board They are proposed by an Advisory Board member or are current Reviewers proposed by the Editor (based on the quality of their work according to information provided by PMI® permanent staff). They will be from different sphere of influence: different fields of science (organizational behavior, history, information science, mathematics, economics, construction…), different research approaches, different countries… Either academics or practitioners, they should hold a relevant academic degree (at least Master's degree, MBA or better, a doctoral degree), and have a significant publications background. The Board members are invited/selected according to their influence and potential impact in term of reaching readers, authors, and reputation. The rationale is to break both the research perspectives barriers and fights and to enable international non-English speaking researchers to not worry about being "different". Editorial Policy The PMJ editorial statement of purpose can be explicited as "Dedicated to advancing the understanding of Project, Program and Project Portfolio Management through empirical investigation and theoretical research" PMJ publishes research relevant to organizations from the project, program and project portfolio management field. Due to the integrative and interdisciplinary nature of these fields, PMJ publishes the best papers from a number of disciplines including, but not limited to, organizational behavior and theory, strategic management, sociology, economics, political science, history, information science, systems theory, communication theory, and psychology. PMJ looks for work that transcends the bounds of particular disciplines to address a broad audience. PMJ publishes qualitative papers as well as quantitative works and purely conceptual or theoretical papers, including diverse research methods and approaches. PMJ aims at integrating the various strands of project and program management research. For any comments, do not hesitate to contact me at: cbredillet@compuserve.com Christophe Bredillet |
