UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND ACHIEVES PMI ACCREDITATION

PMI announced last week that the PMI Global Accreditation Center for Project Management (GAC) Board has accredited the graduate level project management degree programs offered by the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA. The pertinent programs are the Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a project management major, the Master of Engineering in Project Management, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering with a project management major.

The total number of accredited programs now stands at six. The previously accredited schools are the University of Quebec, Western Carolina University, Stevens Institute of Technology, ESC-Lille and the University of Texas at Dallas.

John Cable

PMI initiated its first accreditation program in the mid-1980’s when it accredited the University of Quebec and Western Carolina University. However, interest waned and no additional schools were considered for 15 years. In early 1998, the PMI Board of Directors appointed an Accreditation Action Team, under the leadership of Al Zeitoun, to study the feasibility of reinstituting the program. Among other findings, the Team concluded "accreditation of post-secondary degree programs so important to the project management profession that PMI should subsidize the accreditation program if necessary to ensure its proper development and operation."

PMI subsequently established the Global Accreditation Center for Project Management (GACPM), currently chaired by John Cable, to "ensure a continual and effective process for the Accreditation of degree-granting programs pertaining to the field of project management." The University of Quebec and Western Carolina University were reaccredited under the new program in December 2003 and the Stevens Institute of Technology was added in August 2004.

According to PMI, a number of other schools are pursuing accreditation including: University of Management Technology, George Mason University, Fachhochschule Landshut University of Applied Sciences, University of Sydney, Lancaster University, and University of Pretoria.
