The IPMA Executive Board had a successful private briefing with Ireland Deputy Prime Minister Mary Harney during the IPMA Executive Board meeting in Dublin last Friday.

According to IPMA, President Adesh Jain explained that IPMA represents 40 national project management associations and operates the world's most sophisticated project management certification system which provides a complete career path in the discipline. It has certified over 50,000 professionals of whom 1000 are residents of Ireland. IPMA Vice President Ed Naughton described IPMA's core message: effective project management is the key driver in the achievement of productivity goals.

Mary Harney stated that she recognizes project management is a business skills set that applies to all sectors of the economy, public and private, profit and non-for profit. Her own area of responsibility, the Department of Health and Children, spends €12 billion annually and she greatly appreciates the need to achieve value for the money by doing the right projects and doing the projects right.

Mary Harney was first appointed Deputy Prime Minister, or Tánaiste, in 1997. She was re-appointed Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment in June 2002, making history as the first woman to hold the title of Tánaiste and also to serve a second successive term. She was appointed as Minister for Health and Children in September 2004.
