Japanese Project Management Body of Knowledge

The Engineering Advancement Association (ENAA) of Japan has issued a new project management Body of Knowledge . This new PM standard is quite different from that of the PMI® and APM BoK and the new standard's vision is based on "how project management can best stimulate innovation and generate improved business value."

The background of this new PM BoK was initiated by the Japanese Project Management Forum(JPMF) established in 1997. The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry {METI} supported a continuing ENAA review of the knowledge and capability structures tailored for Japan's project management requirements and importantly to put in place a project management qualification certification programme. The new Japanese PM BoK is the result of this review which included Japanese Industry and Government input coupled with significant level of academic research.

The Japanese BoK is based on a "tower structure" called a P2M which according to the Japanese Standard Committee is more aligned to the business of "management of projects" than to the European and North American Bok dedicated to the management of a single project. The four areas proposed for PM certification by the Japanese are Objectives, Strategy, Value Management and Finance. These represent the areas to be certified under the P2M.
